Makeup Tips for Beginners: How I Nailed My First Full Face Look

If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably already know I’m not really a makeup person. It’s not like I never wear it — I just prefer to have someone else do it for me if it’s a serious event like a wedding, dinner, or party. I’ve definitely tried doing my makeup in the past, but it’s usually a ‘barely there’ look or something I did just for fun, not to actually go out.

That changed this year. Just last week, I decided to wear makeup that was actually visible for an event I had to attend. I was super nervous, but I really wanted to look a certain way, so I went for it — shaky hands and all. To my surprise, it turned out well! People noticed and even complimented my look.

But before I even picked up a brush, there were a few things I had to learn along the way that made the whole process so much easier. That’s exactly what I’ll be sharing with you in this post — makeup tips for beginners that helped me in my journey.

In this post, I’m sharing the simple tips that helped me pull off a perfect makeup look!

Getting the Perfect Base for Makeup

The secret to a flawless makeup base? Great skincare. When your skin is well cared for, the difference is clear — even under makeup. Always moisturize your face (and body!) with a hydrating moisturizer, especially if you have dry skin. It helps your makeup sit better and adds a subtle, healthy glow that makes a huge difference.

Getting the Perfect Products

This part is definitely subjective. What one person considers their must-haves in a makeup kit might look totally different from someone else’s. For me, my non-negotiables are: primer, foundation, concealer, powder, blush, lippies, eye pencils, eyeliner, mascara, and a good setting spray. With just these, I can create a look I’m proud of.

But your kit might look a little different — and that’s okay! For example, if you’re a shine-and-shimmer girlie, a body shimmer might be a staple for you, while someone else wouldn’t even think to include it. It’s all about finding what works for you.

Matching Face Makeup with the Rest of Your Body

One thing that could’ve completely thrown off my entire look? A face that didn’t match my neck! I learned early on that one of the most important steps in achieving a cohesive makeup look is making sure your face blends seamlessly with the rest of your body.

A mismatch — whether it’s between your face and neck or between your arms and shoulders can make even the most flawless makeup look feel off.

So what can you do?

  1. Find your exact shade and undertone. When in doubt, test shades in natural light and don’t be afraid to ask someone more experienced for a second opinion.
  2. Blend, blend, blend. Use a brush or sponge to blend your makeup down to your neck, chest, and even shoulders (especially if they’re exposed). Always diffuse the edges to avoid harsh lines or obvious transitions.

I’m still new to all of this. I’m still learning. But it feels good to finally stop waiting for the “perfect moment” and just show up for myself. Trying out makeup hasn’t made me someone else, it’s just helped me feel a little more put  together when I want to be.

And hey, if you’re also in your makeup beginner era, this might be the little nudge you need.
