What you need to know before you turn twenty!

Exactly one month ago, I turned 20.

I had mentally excluded this year (2020) from my life’s calender but on that very day (November the 11th), reality literally punched me in the face. It reminded me that whether I liked it or not, this year really happened.

I took time to reflect on the plans I had made on the 31st of December, 2019 (yes, I’m one of those people) and honestly, I was disappointed at my progress. What made it slap even harder was the realization of the fact that I was no longer a teenager and that I was in fact already pushing 30.

Somewhere in between my mini self-reflection session, I decided to start this blog. Speaking of blogs, the first time I wanted to start a blog was three years ago but I never did because I was scared of commitment and I thought I was too young for all of that (very silly excuse I must say). Am I killing myself over that bad decision? No. But do I regret it? YES. That being said, this is me telling you important things you need to know to live your best life and make the right decisions before you turn twenty and beyond.

You are never too young!

I wish someone had told me this when I was younger; it would have made a lot of difference. Age is really just a number and it definitely does not determine how successful you’ll become. You just need to be capable of doing the work and willing to face challenges that will most likely come. Take that bold step, start that business, follow your dreams because I mean, “the earlier, the better” right?

Be intentional about friendships

Choosing the right friends is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a person. It is said that we are the average of the five friends we spend time with the most.
Surround yourself with people who motivate you to be better and will stick with you not just in the good times, but also in the bad and the ugly.

Develop skills

Find that thing you’re good at or passionate about and try to get better at it. Best thing that can happen is you finding a way to monetize it! You should also make effort to learn basic soft skills like emotional intelligence, communication, leadership, decision making and the rest. These skills will go a long way in helping you improve the way you relate with other people.

Set realistic goals for yourself

If you want to live a life of purpose, then goal setting is a necessity. This is because it helps you streamline your focus, organize your time and give energy to what actually deserves it. While setting goals, it is important for you to make them as realistic as possible and have practical steps to help you achieve them.

Confidence never goes out of fashion

I’m very much aware of how hard it can be to maintain a healthy dose of self esteem in our time. We get worried about how other people see us and sometimes we may wish we could have what some other people have. I know it’s not easy but once we are able to accept ourselves totally; strengths and weaknesses, we’d experience freedom from social pressures.

Life is a marathon not a sprint

Accept the fact that good things take time. Don’t expect to achieve long term goals in a few days. Stop putting too much pressure on yourself! Instead, focus on the process and enjoy it.

Live, love, learn, explore

Do what you love, go on that trip, be willing to learn. You only live once, so make the best out of it.
